From Constant Fighting and Sleepless Nights to a Very Different Family Dynamic
The Challenge
By the time Amy reached out to KE, life with her two young children was pushing her towards breaking point. Her five-year-old daughter and three-year-old son were constantly fighting, and Amy found herself increasingly on edge.
She was spending much of her day nagging, intervening and trying to manage their behaviour. Instead of enjoying family life, she felt as though she was constantly dealing with the next problem.
Nights weren't providing any respite either. Her three-year-old son was coming into his parents' bed every night, adding disrupted sleep to an already exhausting family situation. Amy needed something to change.
Understanding What Was Really Happening
When Katherine came to stay with the family for three nights, she didn't immediately step in and start trying to correct individual behaviours. She watched. By quietly observing the family in their normal home environment, Katherine was able to see something Amy hadn't recognised herself.
Her son had gradually gained a significant amount of control within the family. But importantly, his behaviour wasn't happening in isolation. The dynamic was affecting Amy's daughter too.
Katherine helped Amy understand that her daughter's behaviour was connected to what she was seeing happen with her younger brother. From her perspective, he appeared to be getting away with things that she couldn't.
What had looked like two children behaving badly, alongside a separate sleep problem, was actually a family dynamic in which everyone's behaviour was influencing everyone else's.
Understanding that connection gave Amy a very different place from which to start.
Changing the Dynamic
Katherine gave Amy a series of straightforward steps to follow to begin changing the dynamic with her son. Rather than taking over, Katherine supported Amy to make those changes herself.
As Amy changed the way she responded and began establishing a clearer structure within the family, her son's behaviour began to change. And something else happened too. Her daughter's behaviour improved.
Amy hadn't needed a completely separate solution for each child. By addressing what was driving the wider family dynamic, the effect began to ripple through the household.
Tackling the Sleepless Nights
The changes weren't limited to daytime behaviour. Katherine also helped Amy address her son's habit of coming into his parents' bed every night. Within two nights, he was sleeping in his own bed. For a parent already exhausted by the demands of the day, resolving the nighttime disruption made another significant difference to family life.
The Transformation
After three nights with Katherine, Amy felt that family life had changed dramatically. The constant behaviours she had previously been trying to manage individually now made more sense because she understood how they were connected.
Her son's behaviour had improved. Her daughter's behaviour had changed alongside it. Her son was sleeping in his own bed. And Amy was no longer left simply reacting to whatever happened next.
Most importantly, when Katherine left, she didn't take the solution with her. Amy was left with the understanding and practical tools she needed to continue managing family life herself.
What began with a mum feeling overwhelmed by two young children, constant fighting and disrupted nights became a very different family dynamic – and a parent equipped with tools she describes as invaluable.
