We Nearly Cancelled – And We're So Glad We Didn't

The Challenge
When Michael and Natasha first contacted KE, they were exhausted. Arguments and tantrums involving their eight-year-old daughter and six-year-old son were taking their toll, and both parents were struggling to know how to respond.
But Michael and Natasha had already recognised something important. They didn't believe their children were simply ‘badly behaved’ or that difficult behaviour was somehow an inevitable part of who they were. They suspected that something within the way they were parenting or within the wider family dynamic could be contributing to what they were experiencing.
The difficulty was that they couldn't see what it was or how to change it. They needed someone outside the family to help them understand what was happening.
Deciding to Get Help
After speaking with Katherine in January, Michael and Natasha arranged for her to spend three days with their family in April. The purpose wasn't for Katherine to come in and change their children. It was for her to observe them living normally as a family and help Michael and Natasha identify the patterns they couldn't necessarily see from within them.
But as the visit approached, Michael began having second thoughts. The children's behaviour seemed to be improving. Family life felt happier. Was there really any point going ahead? He came very close to cancelling.
Ultimately, they decided to keep the booking, a decision they would later describe as one of the best investments they had ever made.
Seeing What They Couldn't See
Once in the family home, Katherine became part of everyday family life. She talked with them, joined in and, most importantly, observed. That gave her an opportunity to see the interactions and patterns that Michael and Natasha were experiencing every day.
She was then able to explain what she had noticed, where changes needed to be made and how the existing dynamic could affect both the parents and their children if it continued.
This wasn't about blame. It was about helping two parents who genuinely wanted the best for their children understand how seemingly small interactions and responses could influence the behaviour they were seeing.
With that understanding, Michael and Natasha could begin doing things differently.
The Reality of Changing an Established Dynamic
Making those changes wasn't necessarily comfortable. As Michael and Natasha began responding differently and changing established patterns within the family, their children pushed back. There was rebellious behaviour.
But rather than seeing that reaction and concluding the changes weren't working, they had Katherine there to calmly guide and support them through it. She offered advice while allowing Michael and Natasha to develop their own confidence as parents.
Gradually, the children's behaviour began to change too.
Three Days Later
By the end of Katherine's three-day visit, Michael and Natasha could already see a difference. But they also understood that three days wasn't the end of the process. Creating lasting change would continue to require effort and consistency from them.
What was different was that they now understood much more clearly what they were doing, why they were doing it and what was and wasn't acceptable within their family.
They weren't left with the expectation of becoming perfect parents or raising perfectly behaved children. They were left better equipped to understand and manage difficult behaviour when it arose.
Support That Continued Afterwards
When Katherine left the family home, the support didn't disappear with her. Michael and Natasha could continue contacting her through WhatsApp when they needed advice or reassurance as they implemented what they'd learnt. That ongoing support meant they weren't expected to navigate every new challenge alone.
Looking back, Michael and Natasha don't describe themselves as a perfect family. They describe themselves as a family that is so much better than the one that first reached out for help.
And the visit Michael had almost cancelled became something they describe simply as life-changing and the best money they have ever spent.
