“I Was Treading on Eggshells in My Own Home”

The Challenge
By the time this mum reached out to KE, family life had become exhausting. Her son's emotional and physical meltdowns were relentless, and she felt as though she was constantly trying to stay one step ahead of the next outburst.
She found herself treading on eggshells in her own home. Everyday life involved planning ahead, anticipating potential triggers and trying to make sure everything ran as smoothly as possible in the hope of preventing another meltdown. But however much she planned, things rarely went smoothly. The emotional toll was enormous.
She loved her son deeply, but the constant tension was wearing her down. Both of them had become tense and irritable, and she worried that the exhaustion of simply getting through each day was affecting the mother she wanted to be.
Perhaps most painfully, the fun and loving relationship she'd once enjoyed with her son felt as though it was beginning to disappear. Something had to change.
An Overwhelming List of Problems
Before Katherine arrived for the three-day home visit, Mum made a list of everything she felt needed fixing. The list felt like a mountain. There were so many different challenges that she prioritised the most important ones, assuming there was no possibility they could address everything during three days together.
But Katherine didn't work through the list one behaviour at a time. Instead, she helped Mum understand how the different challenges were connected.
Rather than treating each meltdown or difficult situation as an isolated problem, they looked at the family dynamic as a whole and what was happening beneath the behaviours Mum was seeing.
Suddenly, that overwhelming list began to look very different.
A Different Way Forward
Even during their initial conversations, Katherine was able to identify patterns within the family's interactions and help Mum understand why certain situations kept unfolding as they did.
The changes weren't introduced all at once. Katherine broke things down into manageable, bite-sized steps, giving Mum practical tools and helping her understand how and when to use them.
During the home visit, Katherine remained deliberately in the background. Rather than stepping in and managing her son herself, she quietly guided Mum through situations as they happened. That was important.
The purpose of the visit wasn't to demonstrate what Katherine could do with her child. It was to give Mum the confidence and understanding to handle those situations herself. Gradually, she began taking back control of family life and creating a more structured and supportive environment for both herself and her son.
The Reality of Making Change
The process wasn't easy. Changing established family dynamics required significant effort and consistency, and Mum hadn't anticipated quite how intense that period of change would feel.
But she could also see the difference it was making. By the end of the three-day visit, her initial concern had changed completely.
Before Katherine arrived, she'd wondered how they could possibly address everything in such a short period of time. Now she was worried about what would happen when Katherine left. Would all their hard work disappear once they were on their own?
Support Beyond the Home Visit
The end of the three days wasn't the end of the support. Katherine maintained regular contact through WhatsApp and telephone calls, encouraging Mum to share both the progress they were making and the challenges they encountered.
When a new situation arose or Mum wasn't sure how to respond, she could ask for guidance. That ongoing support helped her continue applying what she'd learnt independently rather than slipping back into the patterns that had previously dominated family life.
The Transformation
What had once felt like an impossible collection of problems became something Mum could finally understand and navigate.
Instead of constantly anticipating the next outburst and organising family life around avoiding meltdowns, she had a framework for understanding what was happening and the confidence to respond differently.
Importantly, this wasn't presented as an effortless transformation. Changing their family dynamic took work. There were difficult moments, and establishing a different way of parenting required commitment and consistency. But for Mum, the outcome made that effort worthwhile.
She had started the process emotionally exhausted, walking on eggshells and frightened that the relationship she treasured with her son was being lost beneath the constant tension. By understanding the bigger picture rather than trying to fix an endless list of individual behaviours, she was able to begin creating a very different family life.
Looking back, her only regret was that she hadn't found Katherine sooner.
