The Challenge
When Angie first contacted KE, her eldest son was three. Everyday life had become a constant battle because he struggled to follow instructions, but concerns about the cost meant the family decided not to go ahead with support at that time.
Two years later, Angie got back in touch.
By then, the challenges had escalated significantly. Angie and her husband Charles felt that their five-year-old son had taken control of family life, while they had become trapped in a cycle of negotiating, bribing, threatening and firefighting simply to get through the day.
Mealtimes were difficult. Bedtime had become a major struggle. Screen time was hard to manage and getting their son to follow even simple instructions felt almost impossible. He was reluctant to do things for himself and his behaviour towards his parents had become increasingly rude and demanding.
The family now also had a younger son. Although he wasn't displaying the same behaviours, Angie worried that it was only a matter of time before he began copying his older brother.
Something needed to change.
What They Had Already Tried
Angie and Charles weren't short of effort or willingness to find a solution.
They had tried different ways of managing their son's behaviour and had previously worked with sleep trainers to address his bedtime difficulties.
But nothing had created lasting change.
Looking back, Angie realised they had been tackling each individual behaviour as a separate problem – sleep, eating, screens, instructions – without understanding what was connecting them.
They were addressing the symptoms rather than what was driving them.
Finding KE
When Katherine arrived at their home, Angie immediately felt reassured by her calm, positive presence.
The family had understandably been apprehensive about having someone they didn't know stay in their home and observe their family life. In reality, Katherine fitted unobtrusively around their normal routine.
Rather than stepping in and parenting their son herself, Katherine observed what was happening and quietly coached Angie and Charles through how to respond differently.
This distinction was important.
The aim wasn't for their son to behave differently because Katherine was there. It was to give his parents the understanding, tools and confidence they needed to create lasting change themselves.
As Katherine observed the family dynamics, she helped Angie and Charles recognise that the difficulties they were experiencing around food, sleep, screens and following instructions weren't a collection of unrelated problems.
There was a deeper pattern driving them.
For the first time, they weren't simply trying to manage one difficult behaviour after another. They were addressing the root cause.
The Journey
Initially, things became more challenging.
As the established family dynamic began to change and the boundaries became clearer and more consistent, their son pushed back strongly.
But Angie trusted the process.
With Katherine guiding them, Angie and Charles learnt how to remain calm, consistent and confident rather than being drawn back into negotiations, threats or firefighting.
There were no reward charts, elaborate techniques or short-term incentives. The focus was on changing the underlying family dynamics and helping Angie and Charles take back their role as confident parents.
Gradually, things began to shift.
And as the battles reduced, they began seeing more and more of the qualities they loved in their son returning.
The Transformation
The changes began reaching almost every part of family life. Removing screen time helped their son become more engaged and sociable. Changing the family's approach to snacks had a significant impact on his eating. Bedtime – previously one of their biggest challenges – gradually improved. He began doing more for himself and his confidence blossomed.
For Angie, there was another important change: she no longer dreaded taking her son out. Instead of constantly anticipating the next confrontation or difficult behaviour, she could begin enjoying being with him again. Their relationship became significantly stronger.
A few months after the home visit, there were still occasional moments of pushback. Family life hadn't suddenly become perfect but their son's behaviour and the family's day-to-day life had improved enormously. Most importantly, Angie and Charles now understood how to respond when challenges arose.
Katherine had not come into their home and temporarily "fixed" their child. She had helped them understand what was happening beneath the behaviour and equipped them to create the change themselves.
