We Didn't Have ‘Badly Behaved’ Children – But We Knew Something Needed to Change

The Challenge

Alicia and Tim didn't come to KE because family life had reached crisis point. They didn't consider their children to be particularly badly behaved. But they had started noticing changes they weren't comfortable with.

Their children had become increasingly demanding, there was a growing lack of respect within the home and Alicia and Tim weren't always sure how best to respond. They recognised that something within their family dynamic was beginning to shift – and rather than waiting for those behaviours to become more established, they decided to seek support.

They wanted guidance, a clearer understanding of what was happening and the confidence to know how to deal with difficult behaviour when it arose.

Finding KE

Alicia and Tim discovered Katherine online and, following an initial response and call, felt that her approach made sense to them. What resonated wasn't simply what Katherine said about children's behaviour. It was her explanation of what parents could reasonably expect from their children and, importantly, why their family had reached the point it had.

Rather than viewing their children as ‘badly behaved’, they could begin looking at the behaviours they were seeing within the context of the wider family dynamic. They decided to go ahead with a three-night home visit.

Understanding the Family Dynamic

Having Katherine in their home gave Alicia and Tim the opportunity to look at everyday family life differently. Rather than waiting until a difficult behaviour appeared and then wondering how to react, they began developing a clearer and more consistent approach to parenting.

The aim wasn't to create perfectly behaved children. It was to establish clearer expectations, greater respect and a calmer dynamic within the home – while giving Alicia and Tim practical tools they could continue using long after Katherine had left.

The Transformation

Following the three-night visit, the atmosphere within their home became noticeably calmer. There was less shouting, and Alicia and Tim felt better equipped to respond when unwanted behaviour occurred. That confidence was significant.

They no longer needed to feel unsure about what to do each time their children challenged them. They had an approach they understood and tools they could draw upon as new situations arose.

For Alicia and Tim, seeking support before family life reached breaking point meant they could address the patterns they didn't like before allowing them to become further embedded.

An Investment in Family Life

The financial investment had initially been a consideration for Alicia and Tim. But after experiencing the process and seeing the difference it made to their home, their perspective changed.

For them, the support, understanding and practical tools they gained made the experience worth every penny. And rather than viewing asking for parenting support as something reserved for families in crisis, their experience demonstrates something very different:

You don't have to wait until family life feels unbearable before deciding you'd like it to be better.
