When Trying to Make Life Easier for Your Children Makes Parenting Harder
The Challenge
Like many parents, Anna wanted to make life easier for her two boys. She was there when they needed her. She tidied up after them, stepped in when things became difficult and tried to protect them from uncomfortable feelings. It came from a place of love.
But without realising it, Anna had gradually taken responsibility for things her children were capable of beginning to manage themselves. And rather than making family life easier, it was having the opposite effect. Anna was carrying more and more of the responsibility for everyday family life and was becoming increasingly stressed as a parent.
At the same time, her boys weren't always getting the opportunity to experience challenges, take responsibility for their own actions or discover that they were capable of doing more for themselves.
Anna knew something needed to change and reached out to KE for help.
Seeing the Family Dynamic Differently
Working with Katherine helped Anna recognise patterns she hadn't previously been aware of. The problem wasn't that she wasn't doing enough for her children. In some areas, she was doing too much.
Katherine helped Anna understand how constantly stepping in, tidying up and rescuing her boys from difficult or uncomfortable situations could unintentionally prevent them from developing some of the skills Anna ultimately wanted them to have. That shift in perspective was significant.
Instead of asking how she could make everything easier for her children, Anna began learning when to step back and allow them to take greater responsibility for themselves.
Breaking an Established Pattern
Understanding what needed to change was one thing. Actually changing it was harder. Stepping in had become an established part of Anna's parenting, and breaking that pattern required conscious effort.
With Katherine's tools and guidance, Anna began responding differently.
Rather than automatically solving problems or removing discomfort, she started giving her boys more opportunities to experience the natural consequences of their actions, take responsibility and work things out for themselves. It meant tolerating moments that she might previously have rushed in to fix.
But gradually, Anna began seeing what happened when she gave her children the space to do more for themselves.
The Transformation
Within just a few weeks, Anna was already noticing positive changes – both at home and at school. Her boys were becoming happier and more confident as they took greater responsibility for their own lives. And Anna changed too.
By recognising what belonged to her as a parent and what she could begin handing back to her children, she stopped carrying so much of the family's everyday load. Her stress reduced and, importantly, she began enjoying spending time with her children more.
But Anna isn't only thinking about what these changes mean for family life today. She's thinking about the adults her boys will eventually become. Rather than removing every obstacle from their path, she is helping them develop the foundations they will need to become increasingly self-sufficient, resilient and confident young men.
For Anna, working with KE hasn't been about doing more as a parent. In many ways, it's been about learning when to do less – and discovering just how much her children can grow when given the opportunity to do more for themselves.
