From 10+ Tantrums a Day to a Calm, Happier Home
The Challenge
By the time Amy first contacted KE, family life with her strong-willed toddler had become increasingly difficult. Tantrums, night waking and picky eating were among their biggest challenges, although Amy felt the list could have gone on much further.
Then their second son arrived, and things became harder. Amy knew something needed to change. She had already tried countless approaches and read the parenting books, but despite putting in the effort and searching for answers, she still felt at a loss about how to improve things.
Wondering Whether to Wait It Out
After reading the experiences of other KE families, Amy initially decided that she wanted help. But then things seemed to improve. That left her questioning whether it was worth making the investment. Perhaps this really was just a phase. Perhaps, given enough time, the problems would resolve themselves.
Her husband had reservations too. He wasn't enthusiastic about having a parenting coach stay in their home and felt that the ten or more tantrums they were experiencing each day were simply part of having a toddler and something their son would eventually grow out of.
Amy went back and forth over the decision before eventually choosing to book a home visit with Charlotte, who was being trained by Katherine at the time and offered the family a more affordable option.
Identifying the Root Cause
Within the first day of the home visit, Charlotte had identified what was driving the difficulties the family was experiencing. Instead of treating the tantrums, night waking and eating difficulties as completely separate problems, she helped Amy and her husband understand the root cause and gave them clear guidance on how to begin changing the family dynamic.
Amy was hopeful, although privately she remained sceptical about how much could really change. What she didn't expect was to begin seeing results so quickly.
Having a Coach in the Family Home
Like many parents considering a KE home visit, Amy had wondered how it would feel having someone they barely knew staying with them and observing their parenting. In reality, the experience felt very different from what she'd imagined.
Charlotte quickly put the family at ease. Amy didn't feel judged or criticised; she felt supported and advised. Even her husband, who had initially been reluctant about the whole idea, gradually changed his perspective and became grateful for Charlotte's support.
Rather than taking over as the parent, Charlotte helped Amy and her husband understand what needed to change and equipped them to make those changes themselves. That became particularly important once the visit was over.
What Happens When the Coach Leaves?
Amy's next concern was whether the improvements would last. It was one thing for family life to change while Charlotte was physically in their home. What would happen once she left?
Amy committed to following the guidance they'd been given and persevered with the new approach. A month later, the changes had lasted. Their home remained calm, and Amy and her husband felt they had regained their position as the parents rather than allowing their toddler's behaviour to dictate family life.
The frequent tantrums that had once dominated their days became far less common. And when tantrums did happen, Amy and her husband now knew how to respond effectively rather than feeling overwhelmed by them. Night waking and picky eating, once two of their biggest challenges, were no longer an issue.
With Charlotte's initial guidance and the family's continued perseverance, their son was also making significant progress with toilet training.
A Happier, Calmer Family
The biggest transformation wasn't simply that individual behaviours had improved. Amy and her husband felt in control of family life again.
They had gone from trying method after method and wondering whether they simply needed to wait for their son to grow out of his behaviour, to understanding what was happening and knowing how to respond.
Their home was calmer. They were happier. And the changes continued after Charlotte had left because the parents themselves had been given the knowledge and tools to maintain them.
For Amy, the investment she had spent so long questioning ultimately became something she describes as the best money she had ever spent.
