We Thought Parenting Was Just Supposed to Be This Hard

The Challenge

With two young boys aged four and six, Sara and Ian felt as though they had lost control of family life.

They had become terrified of the next meltdown or argument and found themselves doing whatever they could to avoid confrontation. Negotiating, bribing and offering rewards had gradually become part of everyday life. Not because they wanted to parent that way, but because it often felt like the easiest way to get through the day.

Except it wasn't making life easier. Instead, Sara and Ian found themselves constantly questioning their parenting. Was family life really supposed to be this difficult? Were they doing something wrong? Were their boys simply more challenging than other children?

Watching other families only intensified those feelings. Other parents seemed to make it look easy, leaving Sara and Ian wondering why they were struggling so much.

They read stories from families who had previously worked with Katherine and recognised so much of their own lives in them. At times, those stories brought them to tears.

But despite relating so strongly to other families' experiences, they weren't convinced there could really be a solution for them. Perhaps this was simply what family life was going to be like. Maybe they just had to keep firefighting and hope things became easier as the boys got older.

Then they discovered they were expecting their third child. The thought of bringing a newborn into the existing chaos filled them with dread, and they knew something had to change.

Finding KE

From their first conversation with Katherine, something shifted. What she explained about their family dynamics resonated immediately and, for the first time in a long time, Sara and Ian began to believe that family life could actually be different.

They were still apprehensive about the home visit. Having someone they didn't know stay in their home for three days felt daunting. They worried about having their parenting observed and judged at such close quarters. Those concerns quickly disappeared when Katherine arrived.

She explained what would happen and guided them through the process without making either parent feel criticised or judged. Instead, she helped them begin to understand what had been happening within their family.

Understanding What Was Driving the Behaviour

As Katherine observed their family dynamics, it became apparent just how much control the boys had gradually gained within the household, particularly their eldest son.

For Sara and Ian, this was a huge realisation. What had previously looked like a collection of separate behavioural problems began to make sense as part of a much bigger pattern.

They could finally see how their attempts to prevent meltdowns and make everyday life easier had unintentionally contributed to the dynamic they were now struggling with. Once they understood what was happening, they could begin changing it.

The Journey

The process wasn't always easy. As Sara and Ian began establishing clearer boundaries and changing the existing family dynamic, the boys initially pushed back. Katherine had prepared them for this. Rather than interpreting the increased behaviour as evidence that the approach wasn't working, they understood why it was happening and learnt how to remain calm and consistent through it.

With Katherine beside them, they began responding differently. As each day passed, their confidence grew. What surprised them was how straightforward the approach actually felt. There were no complicated systems or techniques to remember. Instead, they were learning how to confidently take responsibility for the things that belonged with them as parents, while allowing their children to be children.

And within just three days, they were already seeing significant changes. The boys began sitting and eating their meals without the usual fuss. They started tidying up after themselves. Bedtime improved and the early 5am disruptions began to change.

For parents who had wondered whether anything could make a difference, seeing those changes happen so quickly was extraordinary.

Family Life After KE

Several months later, Sara and Ian welcomed their third child. But the family their new baby arrived into looked very different from the one they had been so worried about.

The changes they had begun during Katherine's visit had continued, and Sara and Ian were now equipped with something they hadn't had before: an understanding of what was driving difficult behaviour and the confidence to know how to respond to it.

There were still bumps in the road. The aim had never been to create children who never challenged boundaries or a family where difficult moments never happened.

The difference was that those moments no longer controlled family life.

Simple things that Sara and Ian had previously dreaded became enjoyable again. They could go out for a meal without anticipating disaster. Weekends no longer revolved around constantly entertaining the children or trying to prevent the next confrontation.

Most importantly, when their new baby arrived, Sara and Ian were able to enjoy that precious time rather than feeling overwhelmed by the behaviour of their older children.

They began enjoying spending time together as a family again – something that, only months earlier, they hadn't believed was possible.

And when they did need reassurance along the way, Katherine remained available to support them.

For Sara and Ian, reaching out to KE didn't simply change their children's behaviour.

It changed how they understood their children, how they saw themselves as parents and, ultimately, how their whole family experienced life together.
