"I was living in survival mode every day"

"I just didn’t want to be around my daughter and this made me feel like a terrible mother"

Everything we were doing every day that should have been so straightforward felt like the biggest challenge – in particular with my 4-year-old daughter, Ruby. It’s hard to put into words how her behaviour was impacting us as a family. I would dread every part of the day and the lack of sleep we were all experiencing from the extreme behaviour at bedtime and through the night was tearing our family apart. I honestly felt like I had fallen out of love with my daughter because I just didn’t want to be around her and this made me feel like a terrible mother I truly believed that my children would be better off without me. My mother realised how serious the situation was so she searched online for some help and came across Katherine.

A glimmer of hope that Katherine might be able to help

Reading the case studies really resonated with me and gave us a glimmer of hope that Katherine might be able to help. After speaking with her I felt like she was exactly what I needed to help me regain some control but I was really worried that Ruby wouldn’t behave the way she usually does if Katherine was in our house. With other people Ruby was angelic – always polite, caring, well-mannered, kind, helpful…all the things we had tried to raise her to be, however, at home and around us was a different story and our family dynamic was completely broken.

I had been made to feel my child’s behaviour was a reflection of her age

We decided to go for it and booked Katherine for a visit and I can honestly say it was the best decision we’ve ever made! I was absolutely terrified Katherine would turn up and wonder why we called her because for so long I had been made to feel like Ruby’s behaviour was “a reflection of her age” or “she’s just going through a phase” or “it’s just kids being kids”. All of these comments used to drive me to tears because I’d think well I’m obviously just a terrible mother because I can’t cope with my child’s behaviour. However, within minutes of Katherine arriving those fears went away and I felt at ease. Katherine very quickly helped me to see that it doesn’t have to be this way and I suddenly felt a wave of confidence that things were going to change because I just knew that she was right. Everything she was saying just made so much sense to me.

Katherine has been empowering

Katherine has been so empowering and following her support, I feel like I can handle anything! We have worked really hard following the visit, and Katherine has been there to support us with every hurdle. We truly believe in the process and we have persevered to implement the positive changes Katherine laid out and it is well and truly paying off. We have achieved results I only ever dreamed of. It has been an incredible journey and I am so proud of the family we have become. I don’t worry in the slightest that things will ever go back to how they were because this is just our new way of life and it’s brilliant. I love spending time with my children again and that feeling is everything. Saying thank you to Katherine will never be enough, I am so grateful for all that she has done, she saved my life.

The days that Katherine stayed with us were the most eye-opening I have ever had into what real parenting should look like and having her to turn to for constant support and validation (both during her stay and long after) as we embarked on change enabled us to see it through.

Katherine gave me the tools and the confidence to take back the control, reclaim my own time and space and reset the household to a calm space for us all to enjoy.

As a Muslim family, we debated about asking a non-family member to stay and assist with our children...the difference in our children was instant, we cannot put a price on the difference that has been made.
